Ivanka Trump’s Wedding Dress Makes a Huge Impression – Plus, Vera Wang Says She’s “Tired” of Strapless!

Since she converted to Judaism to be with love Jared Kushner after he proposed this summer, new bride Ivanka Trump went in search of a wedding dress with sleeves to follow Orthodox practices. As you know, she called on much-sought-after celebrity designer Vera Wang to create a dress inspired by Grace Kelly’s wedding gown. We saw the stunningly beautiful result this Sunday, and apparently we weren’t the only ones who were super-impressed. Fashion critics all over are giving Trump and A+ for her gown pick, and kudos to Vera for pulling it all together in a month. In fact, New York Magazine is reporting that New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn “just died over the sleeves”, and wrote that “we’re so used to seeing brides in strapless dresses that Ms. Trump’s gown made a fresh statement.” Even the designer herself was inspired by the challenge and the result:

“[Ivanka] was actually very much about being covered and I seized on the chance to do a dress that wasn’t naked and very Hollywood,” Wang told the magazine.

We feel a trend coming on. Do you? Ms. Vera sure thinks so! When asked about the potential for bridal gowns with sleeves to catch on she said: “Nothing would make me happier. I’ve been doing strapless dresses for 15 years. It’s tiring.”

she looked so beautiful on her wedding day! I love her dress! I also had sort of a short sleeve / cap sleeve dress for my wedding -- I remember at the time that everyone was pressuring me to go strapless or sleeveless...but I'm glad I stuck to my cap sleeves!

I'm getting married in 2010 and when I have asked people if they do dresses with sleeves they look at me as if I was alien. I have even been told I'm a "freak" and a minority. I told them to look at how many people buy a bolero or jacket to go with the dress they buy. Doesn't that tell them how many people want to cover up. I tell them I'm getting married in one of the oldest churches in England, I'm not going to an Oscar ceremony!I don't want to put everything on display!I was also told that designers don't dictate what people wear but how can they not do so when most of the dresses are variations on one theme? Check out Holy Clothing Designs they have some fabulous dresses!

I am getting married on April 30, 2010 and my dress has off the shoulder sleeves. I wanted a dress that was not strapless because the two weddings that I was in I had to wear a strapless bridesmaid gown and I felt like I was falling out of the dress.

Yay! When shopping recently, I wanted something more modest, but not dowdy. Impossible to find! Finally, I settled on a strapless that I am going to modify with either cute capped sleeves or a bolero jacket that is quite similar.

I am sooo glad that Ms. Ivana (whom I like alot anyway) chose to be respectful of her new husbands traditional upbringing, and without loosing here own sense of style or flair. And kudos to Vera for pulling it off in less than a month! I am getting married this spring, and was looking for sleeved wedding dresses as 1, my own heritage is more conservative, and 2, I am a bit too voluptuos to go strapless anyway. The sleeved wedding dress market seems to make up only 5% of the offerings, and they are all boring to boot! I can't wait untill more designers realize that we brides do not want to succomb to what many of our families would deem to be "indecent" attire just for the sake of our wedding day, and start bringing us beautiful and more modest dresses that we will be more comfortable in.

Sleeves make a dress more comfortable. I hate that 80% of dresses these days are strapless. I feel like they'll fall down when I'm dancing. The security of straps/sleeves is important to me. Thank you, thank you for bringing back a practical style!!!

Thanks be to God and Ivanka!! I am so tired of seeing brides tugging up the bodice of their gowns through the entire reception. I am determined not to be one of them (besides we are ballroom dancers and even a simple turn is a risk in one of those things!) I wish the photo gallery had an option to filter out strapless gowns. What a time saver that would be! Go Vera, go! Create those elegant, sophisticated gowns. We cannot wait to see more fabulous dresses like this one.

I so love the sleeves. The dress for my upcoming wedding is going to be from the designer Guzzo. She makes beautiful 1500s inspired gowns with bell-sleeves. I have wanted one of her dresses since 2005! I have never liked strapless wedding gowns and I am happy to see the possibility of sleeves coming back in style.
