Ellen DeGeneres Newlywed No More

Ellenportiaheadssquareshot

Thanks to voters in California last night, married same-sex couples like Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are officially null and void. Proposition 8, an initiative to take same-sex marriages off the books (which was publicly opposed by many A-listers like Brad Pitt, Pete Wentz and former president Bill Clinton), narrowly passed by a margin of 52 percent.  DeGeneres, who has used her own show to urge viewers to oppose the measure, was able to joke about issue when she spoke about it last month.

"I can't return the wedding gifts," she quipped. "I love my new toaster."

This is truly saddening. The passing of 8 comes from not only a stance of faith and religion and largely from ignorance.

As far as I am concerned religion should and cannot play a role in politics!

I find it so upsetting that, in a night of such change and forward thinking, that this would occur.

As for Kat's comment on being a supporter of Yes on 8. I respect your choice, although I may not agree with it, but you are only proving your ignorance by twisting Sue Ann's comment around. Ignorance is idiotic.

I, too, am a resident of CA and a firm supporter of NO on 8. I look forward to the day when people will look back on 2008 and the discrimination that is taking place now the same way we look back on the discrimination that took place last century against women and minorities. Of course, just as there continues to be sexist and racist people now, there will always be those who continue to discriminate well into the (hopefully) more enlightened future. It's a shame.

But it is my understanding that it has not yet been ruled that prop 8 actually nullifies the marriages that have already taken place. I think that fact is still up for debate since it wasn't clearly written into the proposition (or so they are saying on the news). I hope that is the case and those who are already married, like Ellen, can continue to consider themselves legally bound. As someone who is looking forward to her own wedding in the coming weeks, I cannot imagine how I would feel if I was suddenly told that my husband and I are no longer considered married.

I live in California also and I was one of the supporters of YES on 8, but I also would like to send my sincere apologies to those same sex couple's who's marriages are no longer legal. I feel your pain but why not fight for another name for your partnership instead of marriage? I stand firmly behind my beliefs and that is that from the beginning marriage meant between a man and a women. WHY CHANGE IT? Like gay once meant happy, now means homosexual. Makes no sense to me. Its not about discrimination, its about preservation of what was from the beginning. And I'm sorry that majority of Californians morals and beliefs seem idiotic to you Sue Ann.

I live in CA and heavily supported NO on 8~ I send my sincerest apologies and thoughts out to the same sex couples whose marriages are no longer legal due to the idiots in CA who voted yes on it.
