Indian-Inspired Wedding Details

Indian

Looking to add a little splash of color to your wedding? There's nothing hotter then the combination of a modern bridal aesthetic mixed up with some traditional ethnic flair. Whether you're into Asian accents, or decorative Indian additions, rich hues and gorgeous detailing go a long way to make your day a standout.

Supermodel and Project Runway judge, Heidi Klum recently celebrated the renewal of her wedding vows to hubby Seal in the Indian tradition. The bride, groom and guests all wore classic saris and sherwanis, the ceremony was presided over by an Indian priest, and everyone later dined on traditional vegetarian dishes from India. If you’re not sure you want that deep of a cultural immersion, here are some stylish tips on how to spice up your ceremony and reception.

The Colors: Think pink with a mixture of bright jewel tones. We love the idea of looking to traditional Indian wedding invitations (like those at RegalCards.com) for inspiration.

The Dress: Keep it modern, but add some dramatic style elements like henna tattoos for you and your bridemaids’ hands, or opt for beautiful Indian-inspired bracelets or earrings (we adore these Indian princess earrings from Fragments - $235). Your beauty focus should be on the eyes, playing up strong arches or exaggerating the size and shape with a dark charcoal liner.

The Details: Adding fresh, decorative elements to your reception doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Want your party pop? Buy some cheap saris in bulk, then use them as tablecloths to decorate your cocktail area, or spice up your favor table with these beautiful golden lac boxes with beads and mirrors ($2.99) from WeddingFavors.com. The final dramtic touch? A henna-inspired wedding cake, courtesy of Kelly Zubal of San Francisco’s Inticing Creations

Don’t shy away from introducing some ethnic flavor into your special day – embrace it!

Fall Wedding Fashions: Vintage-Inspired With A Modern Twist

50s_style

It seems like only yesterday we were all in love with the sophisticated Grecian style that became the ultimate summer wedding staple. This fall, brides seem to be opting for a chaste-yet-chic 50's slant when it comes to their bridal ensembles. The dresses and veils are shorter, the heels are higher and the look is perfect for any bride set on channeling former fashions icons like Jackie O. and Grace Kelly.

While cocktail length dresses may not be for everyone, wedding dress designers like Joan Shum have managed to create the perfect feminine silhouette: Strong modern detailing effortlessly blended with flirty retro forms. Birdcage veils are also a must. From feathered veils to jeweled headgear, this glamorous accessory adds an element of drama to your entire wedding look.

Oh, and you know how you had your eye on those delicate little kitten heels? Forget about it -- this style demands vintage-infused power pumps even Marilyn Monroe would applaud. Your jewelry should also follow the same style aesthetic: Think chunky retro beads and baubles (we think Etsy shop Luxe Deluxe does it best) that manage to balance a sweet retro vibe with a more modern organic vision.

If this season is of any indication, one thing is for certain: The 1950's may be long over, but their impact is far from forgotten.

Bridal Budget: Cutting Costs

Diyinvite

Looks like stars aren’t the only ones scaling back their wedding days. Last week, we asked you what you were doing to save money for your upcoming nuptials, and here’s what you had to say:

DIY Invites and Decorations: Lots of you chimed in that you were doing your own invitations and adding your own decorative elements to your ceremony and receptions to cut down on costs (flowers being the number one thing most couples were willing to downgrade). "I made my own wedding invitations," says Diana. "I am having an Asian themed wedding and it was difficult to find items that fit my personality. I also made my save the dates. I will be using lucky bamboo stalks in a small vase for place settings -- easy to make with lucky bamboo stalks and a few pebbles. I am also making my own ring pillow with some kimono remnants I found at a local shop. I'm using lots of greens instead of flowers which is less expensive as well."

Friday Night Cocktails Receptions Finger food is in and sit-down meals on a Saturday night are definitely out these days. "We opted to have an appetizer and dessert reception on a Friday night from 7-11 PM," says Renee. While many of you said you had friend and family lending a helping hand with catering and decorating, Mary came up with an interesting registry spin: "We're aiming for under $3,000. We're using my parents' home. We'll have a tapas menu, with guests signing up on our registry to prepare dishes."

Smaller Venues It may be fall, but that's not stopping a lot of you from having your own backyard wedding. "To save money on the venue, my aunt and uncle let us use their wonderful backyard," says Rachelle. "We set up the tents the night before. By the time we were done, the yard looked beautiful." Other brides are choosing to have less control over the details in favor of all-inclusive packages. "We opted for getting married on a cruise ship in port," says one August bride. "It's a great all-around money saver, plus they take care of a lot of the details so you don't have to worry about them -- they make/serve cake, provide a cocktail reception with an ice sculpture and open bar, and they provide the reception space / DJ and a ceremony space! All in one, easy-breezy, and much more cost effective than planning a traditional wedding!"

Former "Bachelorette" Jen Schefft Engaged

Bachelorette_jen_scheft Okay all you reality-show loving brides -- pop quiz! Do you remember the blonde that  former Bachelor Andrew Firestone picked to be his fiance on the show in 2002, and who later went on to have her own infamous Bachelorette experience three years later? If you guessed Jen Schefft than you're right, and you'll be glad to hear that she's finally found her happy ending. In a People exclusive, she has announced that she's now engaged to boyfriend Joe Waterman.  The two met last February on a blind date (how cute!) after being paired up by one of her previous blind dates, with whom she had no chemistry.

"We really get each other," Schefft, 32, tells the mag about Waterman, 35, a trader. "I guess it's true things move fast when you meet the right person."

Both Schefft and Waterman are originally from Ohio, and the couple now reside in Chicago, where they plan to wed in 2009.

"We want to keep it small and intimate," Schefft tells People in regards to her upcoming wedding. "About 50 to 60 of our closest friends and family."

Leaving her reality-TV days behind her, Schefft is now the ad sales director for Heavy.com and author of Better Single Than Sorry.

"I'm so excited and so happy," adds Schefft.

Cancer Survivors Say Their "I Do's"

Courtneycourtneyusweddingwinners We were just reading about Chicago bride Lindsay Anderson (who decided to have her wedding at the hospital where she was treated for a brain tumor as a child), when we realized we forgot to congratulate our own favorite cancer survivor, Courtney Dempsey.

Courtney and her fiance Gary were our Us Magazine celebrity wedding winners and were married in a lavish ceremony in Hollywood, FL, last weekend.  Courtney met Gary after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and through it all, the couple have supported each other and stayed positive despite the hurdles they've faced. Congrats guys! We're sorry we missed the wedding, but here's hoping you saved us a piece of cake.

Outdoor Wedding Accessories: That's A Wrap!

Mariapinto_fall08access

Still searching for that special "something" for your fall wedding? Look no further than Chicago designer Maria Pinto. Her gorgeous dresses have graced the bodies of Chi-town stars like Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama, but it's her wraps that are sure to add an air of elegance to your outdoor soiree.

Her couture-infused style may set you back, but it's definitely a must if you angling for elegant, "opulent minimalism" (Pinto's trademark take on the female form)for your special day. We especially love her bridal-ready wraps from her Fall '08 collection. From delicate vintage lace and ruffles, to extravagent feathered confections, Pinto's eye for graceful opulence fits well with an upscale wedding aesthtic.

Thankfully, you don't have to purchase a plane ticket to the Windy City to view Pinto's fab fashions -- Saks Fifth Avenue, Barney New York, and Takashimaya are just some of the stores nationwide that carry her designer line.
