The Best and Worst Wedding Music Picks
Whether it's your bridal procession or your first dance, picking the perfect music for your wedding day can be hit or miss. While some brides choose to air on the side of tradition (The Bachelorette's Trista Rehn chose to walk down the aisle to "Here Comes the Bride."), many modern brides and grooms are pulling out their iPods for inspiration. How do Hollywood's brides and grooms stack up? Well, let's put it this way: Not every song has ended on a high note.
DON'T lead off with a power rock ballad: It may have worked on The Wedding Singer, but it doesn't really play well in real life. Case in point -- Denise Richards and Charli Sheen chose Journey's "Open Arms" for their first dance and then ended up fist to fist in divorce court three years later.
DO fall back on classics: Stick with songs that resonate with more than just one generation. Law & Order star Mariska Hargitay led off her recessional with Motown classic, "Ain’t No Mountain High Enough," while singer LeAnn Rhimes chose "It Had to Be You" for her reception.
DON'T sex up the first dance: Keep it classy – not trashy. A mantra that must have missed the ears of former spouses Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons when they broke it down to Marvin Gay's "Sexual Healing" during their first dance.
DO make it fun for you and your guests: Not every song you pick has to have a special meaning. The music on your playlist should get people up and on their feet. Former Will & Grace star Debra Messing opted for Britney Spears' "Oops!...I Did it Again" at her reception, while Bravo reality host Elizabeth Berkley broke out her best moves to "You're the One That I Want" from Grease.
DON’T Make It Too Hollywood: Sometimes less is more – too bad no one ever told that to former power couple Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. The now defunct bride and groom enlisted former best bud Melissa Ethridge to sing Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" for their first dance (how err, romantic). Apparently nobody does it better than Marc Anthony. The singer and his ex-wife Dayanara Torres held each other close while his song, "You Sang to Me" played in the background.
